Career History

Deborah is a writer, researcher and editor on development issues. She has a particular focus on children's rights, participation, HIV and AIDS and poverty.

Deborah has published on a range of development issues internationally and has just completed a series of story-books focusing on social issues facing children. She has developed training materials on local government, advocacy, participation, communications, leadership, education and conflict management. She has worked with several South African and international organisations in developing advocacy campaigns and drafting ethical guidelines for children's participation in development activities. She has conducted many workshops and designed training materials, for children and adults, geared to increasing children's participation in issues that affect them. She has designed and conducted participatory research with children and young people on issues including land reform, tourism, poverty, children's rights and budgeting.

Deborah started iMEDIATE in 1997 to use her writing, editing and advocacy skills to promote development communications – that is, using communication as part of the development process rather than a description of it.

Career History

Eric provides facilitation and mediation support to iMEDIATE. He also maintains his active community involvement, with a focus on education and youth development.

Eric’s career history is summarised below.

  • Eric is currently Head of International and Governance Relations with eThekwini Municipality, responsible for all Durban’s sister city relationships, all events, including Celebrate Durban and the SA Games. He works on bids to bring major sports and cultural events to Durban.
  • He works with the Mayor and City Manager on all international relations, events and protocol, and provides strategic advice and support to all political office bearers and senior management on matters relating to international relations, intergovernmental relations, events and protocol.
  • Eric manages key stakeholder relationships with the city at civil society, government and private sector level. He is also responsible for the city’s Africa local government capacity building training programme, CIFAL.
